PERSONAL INFORMATION:
I am happily married to my husband Andy and we live on the eastside of Athens. We enjoy spending time with our two grown children as well as our three grandchildren Destinee, Wyatt and Hudson. We are active members of Temple United Methodist Church and take pride in the positions we hold there. I volunteer in various local public schools as well as help serve at Our Daily Bread here in Athens. We spend our free time traveling, bird watching, gardening and being entertained by our very spirited chihuahua Mary Grace and our cat Luna.
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY:
I feel strongly that our teacher education candidates need to be aware of the changes that are taking place in our public schools. In order to keep abreast of these changes, I continue to be involved with public schools and with many teachers who are presently working in various school systems. By reading articles from the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of Math, I am able to stay current and knowledgeable about instructional changes and strategies used in the public school classrooms. In my classes, we compare the new common core with the GPS as we prepare units of instruction. To impress upon my students how important it is to develop the love of reading in their own students, I begin and end my classes with a quality piece of literature. We learn how to incorporate the use of manipulatives in our mathematics curriculum. In my Fine Arts classes, we design projects to integrate the arts into our total curriculum. In Assisting and Assessing Effective Reading, we practice giving assessments to students in order to develop an improvement plan for specific reading disabilities. Through these and various other means, I am able to keep myself and my students informed of the existing and upcoming transformations in our public school systems.
